Fault Zone Analysis — INSULATION
  Electrical maintenance personnel have for years been limited to troubleshooting with no more than a multimeter and a megohmeter. This unfortunately does not provide enough information to allow most technicians to feel totally confident in determining if an electrical problem exists or not. A mechanical operator once said, “If a problem exists with a piece of equipment, and there is an electric cable within fifteen feet of it, then it must be an electrical problem!” If you are involved with electric maintenance you have probably heard at some time in your career, “It must be the motor.” If you are into mechanical maintenance you have likely heard, “It’s probably the pump. Let's uncouple it.”

  2005 Technical Conference Recap
 
  The 11th Annual Motor Reliability Conference was again a big success. The two-day informative motor testing conference was held at the beautiful Hilton Resort on Clearwater Beach, Florida. Attendees came from all over the world and represented numerous industries including utilities, petro-chemical, pulp and paper, motor service and repair facilities, steel and aluminum, government, aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing.

Ask The Techs
     We have had our MCE for almost three years now. We have been performing the MCE Standard Test every six months on our critical motors. Evaluating the resistance to ground and resistive imbalance is easy enough. What specific things should we be looking for when reviewing the inductance data?
