2007 Excellence in Electrical Reliability Award

The 2007 Excellence in Electrical Reliability Award was announced by Tim Owens, PdMA President and CEO, at the 13th Annual PdMA Technical Conference. The Excellence in Electrical Reliability award is presented to the person whose exceptional efforts have contributed to the promotion and advancement of electric motor reliability and predictive maintenance programs. The 2007 award winner is Jeff Brasher of Southern Company.

Jeff is employed at Plant Miller, which is the largest power generation facility within Alabama Power Company. Located in the southeastern United States, Plant Miller is a primary contributor of the Southern Company Generation fleet. Plant Miller was recognized in the February 2007 issue of Power Engineering magazine as one of the best performing power generation facilities in the U.S.A.

In 1994, Jeff pioneered the use of motor circuit evaluation as an electrical reliability tool at Plant Miller. This was the initial use of motor circuit evaluation within Southern Company. The electrical reliability success of the motor program solidified motor circuit evaluation as a viable tool of their overall predictive maintenance strategy.  The program has since been adopted and is now utilized at Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Mississippi Power, Gulf Power, and Southern Nuclear power generating stations.

Jeff also developed a condition-based motor maintenance strategy to address each motor failure mode, which has also proven to be successful at Plant Miller. EFOR (Equivalent Forced Outage Rate) is an indicator of the success of the strategy. As mentioned in the February 2007 issue of Power Engineering magazine, Plant Miller’s EFOR has been less than one percent for the last seven years.

Jeff has been actively involved in predictive maintenance for fifteen years. His primary CBM Specialist duties include: performing static and dynamic motor diagnostics at Southern Company plants, coordinating all motor repairs from Plant Miller; and conducting post maintenance testing in approved motor repair facilities. His secondary duties include: performing vibration analysis, analyzing and troubleshooting high and low voltage AC and DC equipment, troubleshooting variable frequency drives, and performing ultrasonic testing. He is Level II certified in motor diagnostics by Southern Company.

Over the years Jeff has worked very close with PdMA providing product improvement feedback and recommendations. In addition, he has been willing to support us with beta testing new products and for that we are every grateful.

Congratulations Jeff!
